I used to joke with my old roommates that we should declare ourselves domestic partners so that we could claim the benefits such a designation would entitle us.
We were all guys, we lived together in a "committed" relationship (at least for the duration of our various leases) we would often spend holidays with each others families. We didn't have any sexual interest in one another, but surely the government could not intrude in this private area of our lives in evaluating our request.
Well, it never came to pass, but apparently Adam Sandler and Kevin James had a similar idea.
The firefighters in "Chuck and Larry" pose as a married gay couple in order to receive domestic partner benefits. Alexander Payne and James Taylor, the Oscar-winning team behind "Sideways" and "About Schmidt," have written the current draft of the screenplay based on a treatment by Lew Gallo.
