University of St. Thomas ... National Embarrassment?

In the continuing saga of the fallout from the University of St. Thomas's disastrous handling of "Coutlergate," Ms. Coulter was on the "Hannity & Colmes" show last night (Fox News), discussing the campus backlashes her talks have provoked. Of course, the St. Thomas fiasco was the lead-off. Coulter said the quality of the questions asked by students was so poor she couldn't even remember them. In the local coverage of the event, not a word was mentioned of the disgraceful hecklers and campus brownshirts that were at the event, only the little "McCarthyites" who found her "hate speech" funny.

One sensible point she made last night was how liberal students, incubated by the MSM, liberal professors, and the broader popular culture, don't need to learn how to defend their positions. When confronted with opposition, they have to shout and yell obscenties because they can't think for themselves. While the state of conservatism has floundered as of late because of folks like Coulter and "sound-bite Republicans," it is no where near the depravity on the Left. Thoughtful liberals are the exception, not the rule.

The Powerline blog has continued to chronicle the story at St. Thomas. You can access their recent posts here.

In particular, you may wish to view the post regarding St. Thomas "Standard" editor Katie Kieffer. Katie is a bright young woman and an alumna of Trinity School, where I used to teach. St. Thomas administration wished to drag her before a room of her peers where they could express their "offense" at some of the things Coulter said. Kieffer, in a wise manner, refused such a request, preferring to respond to the accusations in print. Particularly interesting reading, and another low-point for a university that bends over backwards to make itself more "diverse and welcoming," which is just shorthand for liberal and multiculturalist.

Abby Hofman:

IN A DEMOCRACY THE ONLY WORD THAT IS SUPERIOR TO PRESIDENT IS CITIZEN

THE PRESIDENT IS CHOSEN BY YOU.

YOU THE CITIZENS OF AMERICA ARE THE PRESIDENTS BOSS.

The problem in America is that change is hard to produce because the Republican system is quick to prevent it.
“Healthy new growths in society (have been) blocked by the overwhelming force and rigidity of economic inequality. People are prevented from rising in social status because the elite Republicans have designed enough measures to prevent this.
One could argue that by withholding acceptance into the upper class, the rich have created an aristocracy in America, which has the rest of the population at its mercy. The rich Republicans “buy protection, and favor, from Presidents; they cheat, rob, and poison the consumer with impunity; continually widen the gap between rich and poor, and tie up in its own greed the resources we need to solve the problems of society”.
The Bush crusade has nothing to defend it’s position anymore on any of the important issues that face The American people.
What the republican party have resorted to are cheap shots at character assassinations of Democrats, because that is all they have. Republicans live in denial of what is right and decent in every aspect of society.
All republicans I have talked to, act like righteous, know it alls, but, when it comes down to a fight where they might get hurt, These republicans run and hide like cowards to let someone else die for them.
Republicans have become cowards in the eyes of the world.
These wimpy republicans have distorted, and nearly destroyed this nation.
Our course as Democrats from this point on should be to “consider the source.” And to not play into republican trickery and lies. In short “do not even listen to them because they don’t deserve to be listened to.

Wow, I am glad we have such a diverse readership and welcome your comments, but as Robert said, reasoned opinions are more welcome. All opinions are welcome, some are more welcomed than others.

And aren't those first two comments dripping with irony? People call names in political debate when they are overly impassioned and can't defend their position. So a pox on both your houses.

Susie:

The Coulters, Limbaughs, O'Reillys ad nauseum know nothing about reasoned debate. Their speeches do not include research or perspective. It's these right wingers who have to scream and shout their opinions to the world, because there's no substance to their arguments.

What this country needs is a media that is willing to produce shows that feature intelligent, calm, rational people discussing the issues, left, right and everything in between. Americans are sick of the hysteria, hate and propaganda.

Jason A.:

Yes, Susie, I agree that these folks sell themselves more than ideas. However, you must include Al Franken, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart and their panoply of imitators on the Left. Do Paul Krugman, Mo Dowd and Frank Rich speak truth? Their columns are epitome of hate, fear, and hysteria. Check out this week's edition of Harper's covering the "Chrsitian Right's War on America," linking Christians ('dominionists") to Nazis. Oh, seriously.

No one has a monopoly on virtue or vice, and Democrats have become quite skilled at labeling Republicans any number of things that end with "ist" at the end, rather than address the issues.

Rita:

The Counter-Coulter Wave
"In Texas the lunatic left's Coulter-hysteria reached some kind of a fever pitch last night with the disruption of Coulter's speech..."

I thought Ann Coulter is the one with hysteria. I would hope that my daughters never betray themselves with such livid negativity. She really does need a dark, quiet room.
