A new course in satanism and exorcisms for aspiring priests at the Pontifical University Regina Apostolorum run by the Legionaries of Christ is a welcome happening. We are finally beginning to move away from the era that "psychologized" sin and Satan. No, really, they are real.

Spooky. This is a challenge to the new evangelization, I think, in that a true renewal means total renewal, including getting reacquainted not just with neglected aspects of Catholic life like increasing vocations and venerating saints, but also with difficult aspects such as challenging doctrines (Immaculate Conception, original sin) and suppressed truths like the personality and omnipresence of evil. Not to mention run-on sentences.
I am reminded of this by Flynn’s recent under-the-radar banishment of the Legionaries from this archdiocese. It is officially sanctioned apostolates like Regnum Christi that are following the new evangelization to its logical, though more difficult destinations. But that can challenge the status quo. A guy who won’t put the jack boots to St. Joan’s and writes apologies in the public press is not likely to be comfortable with the emergence of renewed vigor in looking at abortion, gay rights, divorce, etc. And I don’t think the threat of possessions is really on his agenda.
